Best Directors Working Today (Latin America and the Caribbean)

Picked from directors who are Latin American or Caribbean by birth or upbringing or film in those countries regularly (at least 3 films in the region). Exceptions will be made for quality film-makers of Latin American or Caribbean descent who film stories in the United States of America or Canada about Latin Americans or Caribbeans. Or perhaps for directors not of Latin American or Caribbean descent or residence but who film about the diaspora. Stories about the children of immigrants in North America counted in a separate section.  To qualify I'm making it that the director has to release an excellent film (in my opinion) during the 21st century and I need to be able to find at least 3 excellent reference films. oscar predictions -2011 - film awards (ii)

Best Documentary feature Most likely winner : Exit Through the Gift Shop by Bansky and Jamie D'cruz. A very strange film about street art and the evolution of Mr. Brainwash. Some issues as to whether it's a real documentary but thoroughly entertaining nonetheless. Backup Pick : Gasland by Josh Fox and Trish Adlesic. About natural gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing and the effect on communities. Seems like it'd be dull with those topics but isn't. The green movement should love it Most deserving (My pick): Exit through the Gift Shop is a great film. I don't even care about street art and I liked it. Nothing should stop it from winning except the aura that the film is about a well-engineered con. Best Foreign Language Film Most likely winner : In a Better World (Denmark) in Danish and Swedish by Susanne Bier. Won at the Golden Globes. Got that whole refugee, emotional drama thing going for it. Seems set. But this award is usually the least predictable. Backu...
